To me Brighton answers the question, or solve's the discrephancy, between the coast I know from Maine and the seaside I know from New York, and Coney Island. It is a charming mixture of of buildings, white and pastel stucco houses and hotels, tiny allys and brick and cobblestone streets and even an old church on top of the hill made out of beach stones, smooth and glassy, split in half. The other part of Brighton is the pier and the boardwalk- with flashing lights, loud techno, junk food galre (even mini "American" donuts) and souvenir shops and rides. They all seem to fit together well though.

It seems like it should almost be the mediteranean as opposed to English coast. The buildings have a feeling of being scrubbed clean and sun bleached, even on this cloudy morning. There are endless streets to wander and endless trendy shops that are far to expensive, but good to look at. It is a big town for vegetarian food, and last night I treated myself to dinner at a place called Food For Friends, which was all vegetarian and vegan. I feel like Brighton would be a good place to come with a friend or a date, to share dinners and chips on the boardwalk with. Or maybe its just the amount of couples I saw snogging on the pebbly beach.

Thinking a lot about language and how being able to speak english here creates this false sense that I am somehow familiar with the culture. But my time at the internet cafe is running low, so more on that later.

Cheers,

Eleanor
